Skedsmotun enhances elderly care with Sensio Insight

Skedsmotun Care Center uses technology from Sensio to provide residents with better and more person-centered care. With Sensio Insight, care teams have access to objective health data that provides increased insight and strengthens decisions.

The largest care center in Lillestrom local authority is called Skedsmotun and is located in the countryside at Skedsmokorset outside Oslo, Norway. The care center has two units for residents with dementia, and they have used care technology from Sensio since 2018.

“Skedsmotun was the first care center in Lillestrom to use Sensio’s products and solutions. We now have RoomMate with digital supervision in all rooms, necklace/wristbands with alarm, door sensors and a team alert system, and the care teams know the technology well,” says Charlotte Toven (pictured), Registered Nurse at Skedsmotun.

Insight gives insight

skedsmotun_roommate2Lillestrom local authority has been piloting the e-health solution Sensio Insight since autumn 2024. Insight collects objective data from all connected sensors, primarily from the multi-sensor RoomMate (pictured), and this sensor data is transformed into a resident activity model and offered as visual reports designed to support care services. It provides care teams with invaluable data-driven insights about residents. Skedsmotun is one of the care centers that has come the furthest in using Sensio Insight. The two long-term care units, unit 4 and 5, have a total capacity of 38 residents, and the two units use Insight slightly differently.

“In one long-term care unit, Insight is used regularly and constantly in all residents. Every morning, the report from the night shift is matched with the data from Insight to see how the night has been for each individual resident and what needs to be followed up. In the other long-term care unit, Insight is used regularly to analyse resident data and identify patterns that can help provide better and more personalised care and treatment, as well as to map new residents to get to know their activity- and movement patterns as quickly as possible,” says Charlotte Toven, who adds that they are still exploring how to use Insight in the best possible way and that the units will eventually have similar practices.

She emphasises that Sensio Insight (pictured) is primarily an important tool for detecting and analysing activity at night. With systematic use, Insight can reveal needs that residents with dementia cannot report themselves – such as restless sleep, frequent toilet visits and walking around at night.

“By analysing the 24-hour activities, sleep patterns and sleep quality of the residents, we have been able to provide a more targeted and effective care service tailored to the resident's needs. Insight is a quality tool that is used to ensure that we provide dignified care to each individual resident,” says Charlotte Toven.

Objective and measurable data

Skedsmotun_Ragnhild_1500Ragnhild Deras (pictured) is a Unit Manager at unit 4 at Skedsmotun, with experience as a nurse since 1988 – from 1997 at Skedsmotun. She says that historically, decisions have previously sometimes been based on subjective data such as assumptions and feelings, but now with Sensio Insight they have finally received a long-awaited and unique tool that collects and presents measurable objective data.

“Objective data from Insight provides more effective discussions and more precise conclusions. This is particularly useful in discussions about changes in medication, especially that you can compare data over time to map changes and follow up on the measures,” says the Unit Manager.

Deras says that she has benefited greatly from Sensio Insight as a management tool.

“As a Unit Manager, I often use objective data from Insight, for example to stop discussions early and to optimise staff where resources are needed; it also reduces stress and is positive for the working environment. We also benefit from Insight in training, because we quickly get objective answers to changes that have been made, she says.

Insight is a useful tool

Ragnhild Deras is particularly excited that Sensio Insight is a tool that is useful on so many levels.

“For me as a manager, the biggest advantage of Insight is to make objective and precise data about residents visible. We have had relatives who have been worried about whether their loved ones are sleeping well, and we have residents who say that they do not get help when they shout. Then we can bring up the data from Insight, which in most cases shows something different, and we can more easily identify what the problem really is and implement more precise measures. We experience that most relatives trust this, she says.

Deras has several concrete examples of how Insight has been a very useful tool.

“A resident was very restless and agitated and had trouble sleeping at night. She was given sleeping medicine, and with the help of the Insight mapping, we got objective data that showed that this had a good effect. With data from Insight, you can also see various signs of different infections and thus start treatment and medication early, she says.

The Unit Manager has been an important ambassador for using care technology at Skedsmotun, and she concludes that Sensio Insight is a very good tool.

“We must use the opportunities we have within care technology to ensure the quality of care in both care homes and home care. Insight is a good example of technology that helps care teams make good and effective decisions, she says.

Working together to develop Insight

Skedsmotun_Stine_hovedinngang_1500

Stine Roseth Kleven (pictured), Senior Advisor for health centers and institutions in Lillestrom local authority, is responsible for the implementation and follow-up of care technology in the care homes in Lillestrom. She is proud of what they have achieved together with Sensio at Skedsmotun Care Center.

“Sensio Insight offers many benefits, including better decision support for care teams, a better overview of residents and more efficient mapping of new residents. It is also a useful tool in change management. We experience that care teams find it exciting to work with Insight, and together with Sensio we are working to further develop this unique tool,” says Roseth Kleven.

She talks about, among other things, the possibility of using the data to assign the right expertise to the right resident in the event of an incident, for example whether a resident needs a nurse or a healthcare worker. Roseth Kleven is looking ahead and believes that everyone who works with residents in Lillestrom should be able to use the data from Sensio Insight.

“Using objective health data should become a natural and integrated part of the health service in Lillestrom. Sensio Insight helps to raise the quality of the work we do in the health service and is an important part of our future,” concludes Stine Roseth Kleven.
